The idea behind this film came after both of its producers spent time volunteering abroad. Our own experiences inspired us to take a critical look at voluntourism, a growing trend among wealthy and developed countries.
This supplement to an average vacation or study abroad experience at its surface seems like a way to give back to those who live in poorer conditions. Behind this genuine desire to do good, there are questions of ethics; what are the true motivations behind these volunteers, are their efforts doing more harm than good and are there more effective ways of helping those in need? These are some of the questions we hope to answer throughout the film.
